A youth-centered bootcamp to build foundational cybersecurity skills and digital ethics for Vocational High School students across 17 provinces in Indonesia.

In an increasingly connected world, cybersecurity is no longer a niche. It’s a necessity. This program was designed to introduce the foundations of digital safety, ethical online behavior, and cybersecurity awareness to a highly underserved group: Vocational High School (VHS) students. We believe that when young people understand how to protect themselves and others in the digital space, they’re not just safer. They’re more confident and future-ready.
Despite growing exposure to technology, Indonesian youth particularly those from vocational schools often lack awareness of basic cybersecurity practices. The absence of structured training leaves them vulnerable to digital threats and unable to confidently navigate the online world. A gender gap in tech literacy also persists, especially in digital safety topics.
In collaboration with Mastercard and InfraDigital Foundation, we developed a 4-week intensive bootcamp tailored for VHK students. The program combined interactive expert-led sessions, weekly hands-on missions, case-based discussions, and mentorship to encourage active participation. We also implemented a gender-inclusive outreach strategy to ensure balanced representation.

We began by mapping the digital habits and vulnerabilities of VHS students through surveys and pre-tests, ensuring the program addressed their real risks and daily online behavior. The bootcamp was designed to feel approachable and empowering—even for those with little prior exposure to cybersecurity.
This program resulted in the successful implementation of a nationwide, no-cost bootcamp on digital safety for youth. We produced a complete learning journey: 4 live sessions, 4 cybersecurity missions, 1 learner handbook, a pre-post evaluation framework, and a final impact report. Twelve students received badges of excellence and showcased their learning through case presentations.
